What should not be included in a cover letter?

This is a list of things that should not be included in a cover letter:

  • Spelling and grammar errors
  • Salary expectations (unless the job ad specifically asks for salary requirements in your cover letter)
  • Your headshot
  • Any graphics, graphs, pictures or photographs
  • Negative comments about your previous job
  • Negative comments about your previous colleagues
  • Information that is already in your resume
  • Any information that is unrelated to the job position or company
  • Incorrect information
  • Lies about your qualifications or experience
  • Comments suggesting that you only see the job either as a stepping stone or stop gap
